Photonics Characterization Engineer

To reinforce our R&D team in Ghent, Belgium, we are looking for a committed Photonics Characterization Engineer to characterize and improve the overall optical system for Raman spectroscopy, comprising photonic integrated chips (PICs) and an optical readout platform. Your role in our pioneering therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) solution:

Leading PIC testing and automation

  • Draft design of experiments (DOE) based on design requirements
  • Perform hands-on testing at die and wafer level, monitoring technical status of experiment developments, identifying potential problems and proposing remedial actions
  • Design, build, and optimize die-level and wafer-level (semi-)automatic optical characterization setups, together with automation engineers, for the characterization of the optical properties of PICs
  • Organize and analyse the PIC characterization results to validate performance, and provide feedback to the design team
  • Organize the logistics and the traceability of the PICs

Contribute to Raman spectroscopic optical system testing and analysis

  • Contribute to the design of the system-level free-space optical path for Raman spectroscopy
  • Perform optical testing and light behaviour analysis for the PIC

Documentation and reporting

  • Prepare and present technical reports, analyses, and recommendations
Prepare detailed documentation, including optical design specifications and performance reports

Quality and Collaboration

  • Work within Axithra’s quality framework to ensure robust and reliable system designs for the characterization setups
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor colleagues as needed

Job Requirements

  • M.Sc. degree in Physics or Engineering with a specialization in optics/photonics, or equivalent, and 3+ years of hands-on experience in optical/photonic testing. PhD in Optics/Photonics, or equivalent, preferred

  • Proficiency in wafer-level and die-level experimental PIC testing for passive optical components (waveguides, splitters, gratings, mux/demux, etc.)
  • Proficiency in semiconductor fabrication processes is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with optical simulation with Zemax is a plus
  • Familiarity with Lumerical for photonics simulation is a plus
  • Proactive problem-solver with a hands-on approach, and enjoy working in the lab o Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multinational environment
  • Fluency in English is required
